I hear you on the expensive addiction comment. My mother-in-law is a firm believer in buying her books at either second-hand shops or charity shops. I'd do that here in the Netherlands, but I wouldn't understand much, yet. I've taken her tip a couple of times on trips to the UK, though: I picked up 3 books for a quid at a country house book store, and one of those was a hardback novel. Most of our trips lately have been fly-bys with no time for bargain hunting, which is a pity.
I miss affordable books and free public libraries. Even Barnes&Noble is cheaper than The American Book Center. *sigh*
