Charlie's still there. Had a meeting today where I totally lost my cool...and it felt damn good. If the transfer (to Winchester, Martinsburg or somewhere else that has room and is relatively close to home) isn't well underway by Tuesday morning, they will have hell to pay. I'll contact a lawyer and the media if I have to. I'm tired of this bullshit.

I did fire her doctor...that woman was doing *nothing* for the baby, and was pressing the G-Tube as the only option left. She's also a smug asshole. Though, that may be beside the point.

I'm not happy with any of this. I don't like the way we're being treated, I don't like the fact that they've basically wasted nearly three weeks of Charlie's life and I just want to go home. Add a "Jeff too" to all of that.

Can you get the child's pediatrician on the phone and get him/her to weigh in on this? I assume this is the same person you've been taking Sammy to and someone who is on your side, wanting to help you get this resolved.

If your ped can check the kid just as well and you guys come up with a satisfactory care plan, wouldn't that be enough to get the kid "out of jail"?

Grr. Maybe it's time for a daring daylight baby reclamation!

Oh, honey...good on you firing her doctor! I hope you guys can have Charlie home by week's end.

Damn, I"m sorry. I hope the new doctor is better!

Oh ack. I'm cheering you on, and cheered aloud when I read that you'd fired her doctor.

I've been a little crazed, lately. (Had to take Ted to the hospital in Iowa City, and then had a meeting with the lawyer about his schooling.) So I just kind of assumed she was home by now. Because SURELY she wouldn't STILL be there.

That's INSANE.

Another "good for you" for having the moxie to get rid of the asshat doctor. Sometimes I think they forget who is working for whom. . .

I just don't get it.

A gastrostomy tube is usually only placed when a patient either can't take food by mouth, or can't take enough of it to gain weight. That's not what you've talked about. It's an incredibly invasive surgical procedure with all the risks of any surgery.

What is it that the doctors think you and your husband can't do for her at home?

ugh. I'm so sorry! A mama shouldn't have to run in circles to be able to take her baby home, and if baby needs medical care, it should be clearly laid out, and you should be able to feel confidence in the medical staff. I'm sorry this has been so hard. I hope Charlie goes home with you soon, and thrives.

I hope you can find a better doctor and take your sweet girl home soon!

I agree that a GI tube is completely unnecessary and I'm really glad you fired asshat doctor. Have they told you exactly what is wrong with her?

{{hugs}} Keeping you, Jeff, Sammie, and Charlie in my prayers.

She's also a smug asshole. Though, that may be beside the point.

I've met enough smug assholes to know that they generally aren't as capable as they think they are, regardless of what occupation they're in.

I'm sorry they're giving you such a hard time. Seems like Hopkins is full of smug assholes -- good for you for standing up to them :-)

Would the words "we rescind consent for any further treatment and refuse responsibility for any further expenses" be of any help in this situation? Maybe in writing on a lawyer's letterhead? Addressed to the hospital administrator?

Have you talked with the nurses who see Charlie the most? They can't say much, but if you were to say "I just don't understand why we can't take her home. she seems FINE", you may get some replies such as "we're still seeing issues with [whatever]", which would at least give you some real information. A really brave nicu nurse might also pat you on the back and whisper "we don't understand it either, honey" but if they aren't seeing any problems you're more likely to get a noncommittal 'we love having her here'.
If she's had no life-threatening issues in the past 3 weeks, I can't see why it would be 'bad' for her to be at home, half an hour from an ER.
