We were watching Feasting on Asphalt on Saturday night, and I was struck again by Alton's joy. He's a geek, obviously. And he's found his geek niche. Discussing the history of food, cooking and eating brings him great joy. And I think one of the reasons he did the second season was that he gets to get out and just talk to people, as people. Not at a signing or event, just in their everyday lives, and he gets to learn...the true geek loves to teach but also loves to learn...partly to teach what was learned, but mostly just for the wonderfulness of knowing.

That's why I have such a good time watching the show. I'll always love Good Eats, but it's Alton playing Alton. Feasting on Asphalt is Alton being Alton.

[livejournal.com profile] wyrdragon tagged me for the Seven Things Meme.

List seven habits/quirks/facts about yourself.

Two thoughts immediately come to mind.

1. Only seven?
and
2. There are seven interesting things about me that I *haven't* mentioned here?

Well, I guess we'll find out.

1. One of the reasons I like embroidery specifically and crafts in general is that it makes me feel connected to my mom and Nana. It also connects me with all the other embroiderers through the ages. The technology hasn't changed...pretty much ever. Oh, the thread may be made differently now, and you can get plastic hoops (don't like 'em...they don't hold the fabric firmly enough) and so on, but taut fabric in a hoop and a threaded needle doesn't change. (Frames as well...but I haven't found a frame I'm comfortable with yet).

2. Jeff and I often IM when he's in the living room and I'm in here. I can hear the *bloop* when he gets my message and it makes me laugh. Sometimes, I'll message him *with* the word bloop. Which makes me laugh even more. I love IMing with him...it's often so much easier for me to "talk" through the keyboard, and, when the child's up, we can talk about things we don't want her to know about/don't want to discuss with her yet, without whispering or speaking in code.

3. I went to church with my Nan for a few months when I was twelve. I asked her why there were no altar girls. She said she didn't know, but she'd find out. And, she did. It turns out that they'd just started an altar girl program. She asked if I wanted to join...I didn't. I just wanted to know why there weren't any. And, I've always thought it was utterly, utterly cool of her to call the church and find out. She just purely rocked.

4. I didn't have allergies to anything, save penicillin, till I was twenty-one or two. One night, I woke out of a sound sleep with a terrible pain under my left eye. I went into the bathroom, wet a washcloth with hot water and pressed it to my face. I'm still not sure why...I must have seen that somewhere, or read it. It helped...and then the pain came back. The allergies have been with me, on and off, ever since. And we still don't know *what* it is I'm allergic to. We just know that it's something that blooms.

After living in Jeff's parents basement and the Dungeon, I've also acquired an allergy to mold and dust. Luckily, moving cured most of that. Dust still makes me sneeze and causes the roof of my mouth to itch, but nothing else, so I can definitely live with it. Which is good, 'cause dying of dust just sounds silly.

5. I don't *have* to read myself to sleep, but I sleep a lot better if I do.

{I suppose "I can't think of an additional two things" would be cheating. Plus, that'd only be one thing. I'd still have to think of another.}

6. I was addicted to web comics before we moved here and went back to dial-up. Then they took far, far too much time and I scaled back to a small handful. Now that we've got highspeed again, I'm catching up on a two year backlog. And enjoying it very much.

7. I'm pretty sure that if I hadn't had this journal as an outlet, I would have hurt myself and possibly others during the time we lived with Jeff's parents.

Oh, I love stuff like this:
Saturday May 26th the VNN Vanguard Nazi/KKK group attempted to host a hate rally to try to take advantage of the brutal murder of a white couple for media and recruitment purposes. http://www.volunteertv.com/special

Unfortunately for them the 100th ARA (Anti Racist Action) clown block came and handed them their asses by making them appear like the asses they were.

Fighting hate with laughter and sarcasm. Can it *get* better? Well, okay curing hate with laughter and sarcasm could be better, but darlings, don't let's ask for the moon. We have the stars.

The quote's from Now, Voyager. In case it was driving you crazy. :)

As I awoke today, the words "Craft Wikipedia" were in my head. I thought this was a *fabulous* idea...a site where people can share craft ideas and instructions, and others can adjust them as needed. I was thrilled and relieved to find that such a place already existed. Because the very idea is fraught with drama, and while I don't have the time to devote to starting such a site, it *did* come to me in a dream, and I'd be mightily tempted.

So, the pictures are a bit delayed. I'm working my way through them, but it'll take a few days. I *knew* I should have said "I'll post them before the heat death of the universe".

And now, lunch.
