Oh look, another reason to consider home schooling (Buffy says, "Homeschooling - it's not just for scary religious people any more!")

The film version of "1776," based on the Broadway musical about the crafting of the Declaration of Independence, has been banned in Fairfax County middle schools because of sexual innuendo in a conversation between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. (The rest of the article is at the link.)

In a word, arrrrgggghhhhh!

Of course, the real question is, if there was no sex in history, how did we all get here?

***Edited to add this choice quote***

"I watched the video," coordinator Sara Shoob said. "There's some sexual innuendo and language, and when you're talking about the Declaration of Independence, that does not have to be part of your discussion."

Of course not, that might imply that the Founding Fathers were, you know, human or something like that.

Sheesh

Immaculate conception. All of us. Sex doesn't actually exist.....

When I was a kid I saw that video several times. That little innuendo really did embarrass me every time. I know, I was a sheltered kid. I don't think it required banning, though, especially not these days. Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll ban Britney Spears next!

You know, I never even got the sexual inuendo until i was old enough not to be bothered by it. Of course, I'd seen the movie at least once per year since I was about 6.

Yeah. I'm working on the hubbie, who doesn't want us to homeschool. Standard education is crap.

"One worthless man is a disgrace, two worthless men are a law firm, and three or more worthless men are a Congress!" :-)

However, we must protect the children, no matter what we, their parents, might think. This is ludicrous.

Is it a reason to consider home schooling, or to decide to be highly involved in the local school district?

(Sorry, soapboxing...but the whole "I'm homeschooling because the local school isn't all I think it should be" thing poinks me in the middle of my sense of social responsibility. I don't want my hypothetical kid not in public schooling unless it's clearly not good for this hypothetical kid. I can supplement the schooling, but there are things that I know I would not have learned if I'd been home schooled.)

Oh, I've been planning to homeschool her for quite a while now, this is just one of those things that reinforces my decision. (Sure, there's more to it than that...lots of research, discussion and such.) I agree, if/when she goes to a regular school, I'll be as involved as I possibly can be, and if I was still in the Fairfax school district, I'd be shouting my head off about this. Of course, I could still do that if we lived there and she was homeschooled. It doesn't remove my voice after all.:)
