that's the "starter" sentence of a writing contest I'm thinking about entering. I spent a while last night playing with it, and these are what I came up with:

The TV was still on but only because she liked voices filling the room.

The TV was still on though he'd fallen asleep long ago.

The TV was still on but it wasn't as if there was anything worth her attention. She wouldn't have been able to tell you why she left it on all the time. Sometimes she though it was because she needed to hear voices that weren't in her head.

The TV was still on but that was of no consequence. The real problem was the body sprawled in front of the screen. Martha was certain it hadn't been there when she'd left the house that morning.

The TV was still on and the cat was watching Oceans Eleven again. I switched it off. If I wouldn't sit through it for Paulina, I wasn't about to endure it for Mr.Kittyface.

The TV was still on, but everyone was paying attention to Louise, who was in the middle of delivering her third child.

The TV was still on, but no one cared, as they'd all died from carbon monoxide poisoning three hours before.

The TV was still on, but it didn't mean I was enslaved. Oh no. I could turn it off at any time I liked. But, I had a burning desire to watch "When Cows Attack" for a fifth time. And though I went out to work, it wasn't *just* to provide the electricity to feed the television and the digital cable (with all the movie channels) to entertain it. No, I was my own person, and the "offering" I left on top of the set was nothing more than a coincidence.

I wonder if surreal is in this year.;)
