Nov. 10th, 2008 04:37 pmHey neat! a town built in the middle of a lake, not on an island, but actually below water level. It's the ancient city of Seuthopolis, in Bulgaria, and it's been underwater since 1954, a mere 6 years after it was initial discovered. Now, it's coming up from the depths with the lake staying around it.

We had wonderful luck at Goodwill on Saturday. Samantha just had a growth spurt, and we were able to find mounds of things for her, including a sweater, a big sweatshirt and a bunch of pants. It was wonderful to watch her go through the bins of books...she got a wonderful stack. I found the companion book to David Attenborough's The Life of Birds (well, it *looks* like a companion book). The pictures alone were worth the purchase.
I was a smartypants and bought a large ziplock bag of silverware...twenty-some spoons, eleven butter knives (including two of those little spreaders), fifteen (I think) forks, two small ladles, a big serving spoon and serving fork and four cocktail forks, one of which was actually silver. For four dollars and fifty cents. It'll be a while before we wonder where all the utensils have gone. Jeff came across a wonderful nightstand for Sammy's room. Unfortunately, someone seems to have spent a lifetime blowing cigarette smoke into the drawers, so it's living on the back porch for a bit. It'll be allowed in soon. :) Oh yeah! And Sam found a battery-powered horse that would have been cool on its own, but it actually works. Turn it on and it *walks* across the room, then throws its head back and neighs. We were all amazed.
Two disappointments. A bag went missing (the only thing we can figure out is that someone else grabbed it by accident) and the lamp I picked out doesn't work. We stopped by Goodwill Saturday night and they didn't have the bag. But I hadn't tested the lamp yet, so Jeff's going to return that tomorrow (electric stuff has a three day "it broke/never worked" guarantee) and see if the bag turned up.

I've always known not to open an umbrella in the house, but it was only recently that I learned it was supposed to be bad luck to do so. I always thought umbrellas shouldn't be opened in the house because someone could get their eye poked out.
