Honestly, I think the painting can be appreciated by anyone who just knows who Morpheus is. (He's the sandman. Now you know. I hope I don't get drummed out of the Sandman guild for that.;) As far as I can tell, there don't seem to be a lot of in-jokes or metaphors in the painting.
