Sam learned how to ride a bike a few years ago, but she was never really confident because we lived two places in a row where she really couldn't ride much. She rides here and loves it. But she's rapidly outgrowing her bike. We've brought up the idea of a new one, but she finds that ridiculous. I'm pretty sure she's convinced she won't be able to ride the new one, or at least ride it well.

We were going to start talks about a new bike in the next few days and, if things went well, we'd get her one for Yule. But then I started thinking about things like weather and snow and ice patches. We've moved the possible new bike to her birthday, which is a week after the spring solstice. Much, *much* better chance of bike weather.

Charlie has devised the most interesting crawl. She kneels on one leg (usually her right) and has the other leg bent with the foot on the floor (so, the classic proposal stance). She pushes off with the foot and she's going. She sorta crawls with the...knee leg, but mostly propels herself with the foot and her hands. And she's speedy too!

This isn't compensation for anything...both legs are just fine. I'm not sure how she came up with this, but it's definitely faster.

Cool. Dave Kellet is doing rejected H'ween costumes for his characters this week. This is one of my favorite themes.

Let Them Sing it For You. Type in lyrics and the site sings it back to you. Far more fun than one would think.

The Jack Skellington pumpkin was the fiddliest I've ever done. But the work paid off. It came out well. As did the Cookie Monster I drew, then carved. I don't think I ever noticed his lack of nose before.

Also, my packrat tendencies served me well, as I not only knew where my exacto knife was, I knew where the replacement blades had ended up.

We bought three pumpkins and I did six carvings. Cookie Monster, Jack Skellington (just the features), Rachel Maddow (and it really does look like her...sometimes), the Grateful Dead skull, H'ween Scooby Doo and a night scene of an owl, the moon and leaves (I adapted it from a stencil I downloaded...I'd link but I can't remember where I found it). Pictures will be up as soon as I find my card-reader so I can get 'em off the camera.

Oh bugger. Two of the presents (bought at the same time, sent separately) went to the wrong address. I really hope the people who live there just return them and I don't have to bring down the hammer of justice on their heads.

Or at least find a phone number and arrange a pick-up. At least I know where they are. That's a plus.

SQUEEEE! Joan Jet Barbie. And it really does look like eighties-era Joan.

The baby I take care off craws exactly the same way - one knee on floor per regular crawling style, other leg with foot on floor, pushing. It's cute but looks kinda strange, but she sits the same way - one leg tucked under her/to the side, other leg forward... I think it's because she's always on the go and the leg/crawl thing makes it easier for her to sit/crawl/turn around.

Or maybe it's due to something completely different and one of those baby-secrets we'll never know of. :P

Elliot had a similar crawl. Instead of being on the knee, though, the right thigh was on the floor like he was sitting with legs folded and the left knee was up with the foot flat on the floor.

We called it the drunken-monkey stomp. Slide-bump-slide-bump-slide-bump all across the floor using his hands and the left foot. The boy made really good time, too.

I told my mother about it and she said my brother and I did the same thing.
