Iron Baby. Yeah, I'd watch that movie. :)

Neatorama has a very interesting article about Taps. The song, not the movie or the shoe.

I think I've mentioned that Charlie's vocabulary is exploding. I've been keeping a list, and the last time I checked, there were over forty words.

She's also doing well at identifying things, though she currently seems think that her ears are both ears and cheeks. No idea why. And now, when she's asked where her cheeks are, she says "Sister!". Ask where her ears are and she points to Jeff and says "Da!". I'm beginning to think the kid is messing with me. ;)

*This* is wild. An international team of researchers shuttered themselves inside a virtual spacecraft in Russia Thursday to begin a 520-day simulation of a manned mission to Mars.

The six-man team isn't scheduled to exit their self-contained environment, which includes a mock up of the Red Planet's surface, until November, 2011.

During their mission, the crewmembers will 'fly to Mars' during the first 250 days, land and explore terrain for a month, and then embark on a 230 day return flight.

Their enclosure is equipped with enough food, water, and other supplies to last through the duration of the period. It's also armed with video games, books, and other materials designed to stave off boredom.

Aw. Rue McClannahan died. I really liked her. If you get a chance, read her autobiography. It's quite fun. :)

Cleolinda has a thought that blows my mind about how we look and how we see ourselves.

Re: Cleolinda's post. I remember as a kid reading about attempts to make a "mirror" that would reverse the reflection (it was a long time ago, so I don't know if it was to be a camera and projector, or something different). It does strike me as a very reasonable hypothesis; I get confused at photos, myself, because it's different than what I'm used to seeing (related concept, I think: Uncanny Valley).

At Wiscon, I got to see David Levine talk about his experiences at a volunteer-run Mars mission simulation environment (two weeks) recently. When he was there, one of the guys who was there with him was going on to be a part of that 520-day simulation you linked to above. He talked about the guy a lot, and basically said he was made of pure awesomesauce.

Cleolinda's put into words, very clearly, what I've been thinking, off and on, for ages. Try parting your hair differently for a few weeks and see if your self-image doesn't change a bit ~ in my case, it suddenly seemed as though I both knew and LIKED the person I was seeing in the mirror. Not more beautiful or younger or un-wrinkled, but recognizable as ME, the me I have been since I was born and a validation that I am still 'true' to my inborn nature. That was a BIGGIE!!
